CHAPTER SIX
Purgatory Today
Contemporary private revelations have clearly contributed to
our growing understanding of Purgatory. And many 20th
century accounts of visions, revelations, and dreams involving Purgatory are still being recorded. Though nothing startlingly new has been revealed, the revelations clarify and illuminate existing Church teachings. They also help us to apprehend the “reality” of Purgatory—a reality as genuine as Heaven and Hell. The following excerpts provide a sampling of some of the most profound revelations of Purgatory from the 20th century.
Padre Pio
Francesco Forgione, known to the world as Padre Pio, is considered by many to be the greatest mystic of the 20th century. Known for his bloody stigmata, Padre Pio is on record as having been blessed with almost every mystical gift known to the Church. Not surprisingly, Padre Pio claimed a great relationship with the suffering souls of Purgatory and even requested permission of his spiritual director in 1910 to offer himself as a victim soul for the souls in Purgatory:
Now, my dear father, I want to ask your permission for something. For some time I have felt the need to offer myself to the Lord as a victim for poor sinners and for the souls in Purgatory. The desire has been growing continually in my heart, so that it has now become what I would call a strong passion. I have, in fact, made this offering to the Lord several times, beseeching Him to pour upon me the punishment prepared for sinners and for the souls in Purgatory, even increasing them a hundredfold for me, as long as He converts and saves sinners and quickly admits to Paradise the souls of Purgatory. But I should now like to make this offering to the Lord in obedience to you. It seems to me that Jesus really wants this. I am sure that you will have no difficulty in granting me this permission.1
Following are two accounts of Padre Pio’s interactions with the suffering souls in Purgatory. They are excerpted from the highly recommended book The Holy Souls, Viva Padre Pio by Fr. Alessio Parente O.F.M.Cap. (National Centre for Padre Pio, Inc.):
From Purgatory to Heaven
It was the usual evening scene in the friary’s refectory (dining room). The friars, as was customary, had come together to partake of their frugal meal, and Padre Pio, too, was nibbling at something. The lively chattering was abruptly cut off by a brusque movement on the part of Padre Pio. He suddenly darted to the door of the friary and started up a lively conversation with some people, who, however, remained invisible to the other friars who had followed him. As they watched Padre Pio talking to what seemed to them to be nobody, the friars remarked to one another: “He has gone crazy!” However, they asked him whom he was talking to. Understanding their chagrin, he smiled and answered: “Oh, don’t worry. I was talking to some souls who were on their way from Purgatory to Heaven. They stopped here to thank me because I remembered them in my Mass this morning.
